Happy St. Patty's!

Happy St. Patty's Day, Everyone!
Me? I'm knitting me some good Irish-green socks. Being of the Scottish / Irish dissent, I find these quite appropriate. Pictures to come when the second sock is off the needles. Also making the FO pile? Well, something for someone's baby. 'Course I know they read this blog - so no pictures until the Mommy sees it first.
Now, go do something green!

The Nifty Swifty

What really surprised me upon arrival was the size of the box:

It's now in my knitting corner looking pretty. Tuesday, March 13, 2007
Birthday Presents!

It's a Nifty Swift from the Knitting Zone. I'm soooo excited. I've really held off ordering a swift and have been abusing Chris instead by forcing him to help me wind skeins. It's usually a slippery slope we walk when one of us (usually Chris) mans the ball winder and the other has to do a goofy dance running yarn around two dining room chairs in order to achieve knitting bliss. I'll miss these days, but am content to allow them to be happy memories and to be replaced by this new toy!
I had formed some opinions on what I need to have if and when entering into a long term relationship with a Swift. I mean, $62.50 isn't chump change and I'm hoping that this is sort of the Rolls Royce of swifts. At the very least, it better be pretty darn Nifty Swifty, if you know what I mean. I had decided against the umbrella / clamp to the table swift because truth be known, I don't love the look of them and I kind of hate to clamp things to my furniture. I've made an exception with the ball winder, but I think I'm at my clamping max. So I wanted it to be table top, but to still fold up for New York City apartment living space issues. This seems to fit the bill and I do think it looks kind of Nifty too - so hey. And the good people at Knitting Zone gave me free shipping and I got an email this morning that it has already shipped out Priority mail. This means I could have it tomorrow or Thursday. It could be a Swifty weekend for me! Happy Birthday!
Shout out to Darren - whose comment yesterday had me laughing for awhile this morning. There was a time in high school when I would ride around in Darren's car and he would do things like pick a dark and scary back road to pretend that the head lights went out on the car. I would scream and sometimes flail with fear - which one time resulted in me throwing the moving car into neutral at an inappropriate time. Who knew cars could make noises like that? Oh, good times!

It's My Birthday and I don't want to cry!

It's my birthday! I'm sort of surprised that I'm advertising it because last night I was telling Chris that I wasn't going to acknowledge the day. But I'm feeling good about it right now, so here we are. It's a beautiful day and people who I love have lavished me with good wishes, pretty cards and even a present or two (Chris gave me the book "Teach yourself Visually Knitting Design". I'm really excited about this book and was totally surprised that he remembered that I had dug it in the bookstore a few months ago.)
My mom gave me a beautiful sweater, my friends gave me a new purse that knocked my socks off - I love it (pictures to come when I've got my camera) and Chris and I are off to dinner with friends tonight to celebrate a little more.
So, in these here 31 years, I've collected the best friends on earth - expanded my amazing family by adding Chris and his crew and basically made myself a very happy little life. I couldn't be happier than I am right now. My life is good and stable and solid and very, very happy. I've been lucky enough to be loved by the best people on earth - you don't get better than that.
A shout out to my mom. We had quite an adventure together 31 years ago today. Thank you so much for giving me this life, mom. I really love it and to date, it's the best present ever! : )

Socks, Pooches and Legal Yarn Aquistion

My green socks are done! Warm feet are living
here! I love the new sock blockers that Chris made me - they're working great!

I totally scored some Posh Pooches in the bargin basket at Barnes and Noble. See that 40% off sticker? I also go the member's discount - so yay!
The kit comes with a book of totally cute patterns for dogs. I loooove dogs and Chris and I have plans to get one sometime next year so I'll have to make some plans to make sure that I have one of the poshest pooches in the Slope!

Look at the cute needles that were included in the set. Click the picture to see a better view. The needles have two different dogs on the tops! I love them!
I've been a little absent because my new company is doing pretty well. I'm thrilled and it's keeping me busy, which is a welcome activity. Of course, it's totally isolating me from the outside world. I need to return some phone calls, a ton of emails and try to make plans to see my family some time before next Christmas (that happened last year...we can't have a repeat).
A big shout out to Nancy from Romancing the Yarn - she held a little raffle for some Cascade Fixation and guess who was the big winner! I never, ever win anything - so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I heard the news. Nancy was so sweet to have a raffle like that and I've pledged to make some pretty, pretty socks with the yarn. I've never worked with it, so a report is forth coming. I'd like to point out that this aquisition of yarn is totally within the rules of the Knit from Your Stash pledge!
And for now, that's all the news that's fit to knit!

Socks! Socks that Block!

What's this? Why, it's a sock blocker! Chris made this (and several others) for me over the weekend. We used a guide found here and they were easy to make and they seem to work really well.
I really wanted some blockers ever since I went on a bit of a sock yarn buying binge a few months ago and the aquired sock yarn from my visit to the yarn farm, but just couldn't seem to get myself to fork over the $25 average cost for plastic blockers. You can see a sock on one of the blockers here (sock made for the Sock Hop this fall). I love these socks and since they're ready for a wash (I've been wearing them quite a lot lately) I'm finding that they shape really well with these - and the hanger tops are nice for a quickie dry block hanging.

Valentines ready to be filled in and sent out to those we love are also on the table.
These are my newest socks on the needles. I am so in love with this yarn. The yarn is from my yarn farm buying visit - called Rainforest (75% Merino, 25% Acrylic, Hand Dyed, 7-8 sts on size US 2 needles). The pattern is from Knit Socks! By Betsy Lee McCarthy. This book has become my "go to" sock knitting patterns. Everything on the web lately seems to be toe up with that crochet cast on with wraps (the heel totally confuses me). I have downloaded Wendy's extended tutorial on how to manage her socks, but haven't had time to hunker down and practice it, so for some satifying knitting, I'm going with what I know.
Now, WNBC is predicting a possible Nor-Easter for us on Wednesday. I would just love a winter day on the couch mid-week to nurture my Season Affective Disorder. I've been feeling the need to just settle into a corner of the couch and be quiet. This would be an excellent fuel for that need. Let's all pray for snow!
Over the weekend, Chris and I checked out Helen Mirron in The Queen (Excellent movie and Ms. Mirron is totally worth the hype - she rocks).
That's all the news that's fit to blog!
I'm going to go sign Valentine's and

The Lucky One - Realizations
It's a moment in your life when you feel the blessings and you understand your luck. Maybe it's a song you hear or a series of pictures that remind you that all of the work, all of the aggravation is nothing. This life, these experiences and these people - the people you were lucky enough to collect around you...this is it. This is heaven - this is the good stuff this is the best thing ever and you're right there in it! What on earth did you do to get this lucky? The moments, the snapshots - the happiness of them all. I am so in love with this little life I'm living and these people who changed my life and made me remember that they are the gifts in life - they are the reason for everything. They are the world.

A Bone to Pick with Lifetime
But Nora Roberts isn't something I'd even describe as guilty pleasure. People magazine is a guilty pleasure (read: something I'm just slightly embarrassed to be caught reading in public). But Nora weaves stories in a way that I can really get behind. She never has the plot turn into the obvious (or very rarely). Now - I must clarify that I tend to turn up my nose at her compilation pieces - the ones where they cram essentially three short stories into one book. I tend toward her full blown novels and my favorite has been, for years and years, Montana Sky. This is a story that I tend to read when I am at my lowest because its heroin is a tough cookie - the kind of gal I'd really like to be if I had it in me. She runs a ranch, lives in Montana and has a really interesting cast of characters who keep things around her far from dull. She also has a makeshift family of fiercely loyal friends. I love that kind of thing - the fierceness of family love and romantic love. The whole novel is tops with me. I think about the main character Willa when I'm being particularly stupid and weak about something and then I try to buck up. I think I still secretly hope that I'll somehow wind up in her fictional life - finally be free of New York City, finally be free of corporate life and be finally free to be at one with nature and friends and the pace of a life that is dramatically different from the one I live now. Maybe my father's life on the farm was where my heart actually longed to be. Can't figure out how I got pressured to end up in the biggest city in America - but that's another story.
So I'm a big fan of Nora's and imagine my excitement when I find out that Lifetime television is making a movie out of my favorite book and lordy, lordy ladies and gentlemen - John Corbett is going to play the dashing hero, Ben McKinnon. Sigh. Sigh. Sigh. There's no way around it, he's a dream boat.
It aired tonight and I knew it would happen and it did - they screwed up my favorite story. They tried to pour 700 odd pages into two hours and they even created a freaking character who never appears in the book! They focused on all of the wrong things (I will save you from the painstaking details - Chris was not spared. Ten points to him. He also has a degree in English Lit, but does not share my passion for these novels). Anyway -
Daniel Steel's books get epic four hour movies that are so long they can only be viewed on the weekends. I suspect that with this kind of length they might act out the story page by page from the books. What the hell? Give my girl Nora her props - don't churn out a crappy two hours and make my girl Willa look soft. The coolest thing about Willa is that she's an ass kicker - not a sniveler. She takes care of her own - she's a cowgirl in a true Annie Oakley kind of way. She's the best shot in the county - better than the guys, a stunning horseman and she knows all about ranching. She works like ten men and always seems to know what's right. I love her. I just flat out think she's the kind of lady I'd like to be if real life worked out like novels. That is the book that makes me want to write! That is the book that makes me want to find a character as tough as Willa and write about her. I would be forever grateful to Nora if she'd turn Willa and the gang into a series. There's so much that could happen out in Big Sky Country to support a series. Why oh why isn't she my character???
Again, digression.
So Lifetime TV, listen up - I'll be tuning into the other movies, but just know that I'm screaming about everything you're getting wrong from the comfort of my couch.
Just saying.

Home Again, Home Again
Some knitting was done on this trip, but not much. I'm working on a branching out scarf for a NYC friend and that kind of lace work takes a little bit of time. As I knit that up, I'm also plotting for my next stash project. What shall it be?? I think maybe some socks, or gloves or mittens or, oh heck! I don't know - the possibilities are endless. I also picked up a free pattern from Lions brand for some felting wool that I've stashed since November of 2006. The pattern is for an excellent little bag.
This weekend is all about recovery for Chris and I - cleaning our house, watering the plants, doing the laundry and the shopping and also a time of rest. We're both just praying to get to Friday night so that we can slip into bed and NOT turn on our alarm clocks.

Baron Von Teddy - Beary Cute!

Meet Baron Von Teddy -
the cute little bear that I knitted. He was an inexpensive kit that I picked up in a bargain bin at a discount store. He was too cute to pass up! I've saved the pattern and plan to make some more Teddy Bears in the future. I think he needs a friend!

This is a completed scarf for my friend Jenn's mom (click the picture for a better view). The pattern is actually from Odd Ball Knitting and I love, love, love the diamond lace patterns. I had plenty of yarn left over from the skein to make her a hat to match and enough yarn to make another hat - maybe for me. How can it be that a knitter, who has made a crap load of hats in her lifetime, not have a hat for herself in the winter? We're taking care of business as we speak.
I have another scarf that I made from yarn farm yarn, but I've been wearing it so much, that I haven't had a chance to take a picture of it. It's from Last Minute Knitted Gifts and was a true pleasure to knit.
There's a tried a true fact of life, knitting with pure wool, the good stuff, is a pleasure unlike any other for me. I just love the feeling of it in my hands, the way the stitches are so defined. I love to colors of wool I chose. I love everything about this haul. It's making the whole yarn diet thing a lot easier. My advice: if you're planning to stash diet, buy a heap of the good stuff for your stash - it makes all the difference.
That's all the news that's fit to print.

On The Band Wagon

2. We will not buy any yarn during that period, with the following exceptions:
2.a. Sock yarn does not count. What? You think we are made of stone?
2.b. If someone asks for a specific knitted gift that we really and truly do not have the yarn
2.c. If we are knitting something and run out of yarn, we may purchase enough to complete
2.d. We each get one "Get Out of Jail Free" card -- we are each allowed to fall off the wagon
3. We are allowed to receive gifts of yarn.
4. Trading stash is allowed.
5. Spinning fiber of any sort is exempt.

The Follow Up

Go ahead, just take a minute to click on the picture and view it in all its beauty. I will wait for you.
The blue verigated on the top, sat on my lap during the drive home. I am particularly fond of it and am afraid that I can not knit it up, but will rather keep it as a pet and represent it to guests as piece of art work in our home. This is unusual to non-knitters, but I know that the knitters who are reading this blog understand and do not find this thought the least bit odd. I thank you for that, dear knitters!

The Yarn Farm

Who did I spend the day with? Oh yeah - it wasn't a baaaad day at all! Hanging out at a place that I am lovingly calling the "Yarn Farm" and browsing through the fruits of this guy's (and several of his friends) labor. Doesn't look like he has a hard life, does it? Trust me, this little guy and his pals are doing all right.
My friend Jen called me a few weeks ago to tell me that she had secured an invitation to a private yarn sale and asked if I'd like to go.
Would I? Oh yeah. So we packed up the men and headed to the super-secret location to a once a year only private yarn sale. I went into sensory overload when I came in contact with these yards and yards of hand spun, hand dyed wool happiness. Knitters of the world, just take a moment to close your eyes and picture yourself in a field that is absolutely packed with bins like these, full of wool and cotton and silk and brillant colors and you're given a bag to fill as full as you want for one very, very, very low price. I can't tell you how happy I am that I bought that station wagon two weeks ago. So much room for yarn!
So here I am - on this wonderful farm, with the sheep looking sleepy and completely unconcerned that their old coats have been spun up and dyed and are being carted off by delirious and light headed knitters - who have developed odd and glossy stares as they walk away from the yarn farm with a filled bag of goodness (truth be known, some knitters walked away with several bags of happiness. Who needs therapy when places like this exist?)
Blogger is being a pain in the ass again and only giving me three picture uploads. Later tonight, I'll upload pictures of my personal haul (it's a thing of beauty). And for the record, I did ride home with skein of handpainted yarn in my lap and I do think that's normal. :)
P.S. See that bag I'm holding? It got a lot fuller than that before then end of the day! So check back for pictures.

Happy New Year!
So why don't we have any knitting content? Well, because I've been so busy with the holidays that I haven't done a lot of knitting. I flew home to Pittsburgh last week and spent some time with the family. It was wonderful. I wanted to go back for another round of hugs more than I can tell you. This was possibly the best Christmas since 1995 ( during 96 & 97 we lost three major members of the family and it's taken awhile to bounce back). But this year, we really partied down. We started off with a family party at mom's house that included a bunch of the family where we had our gift exchange and many, many cocktails and a ton of laughs and stories and lots of hugs and memories and great music. We followed that with church Christmas Eve at my brother's church (whose minister used to be the minister at our family's church when I was young). We followed church with the great doughnut caper of 2006 where my SIL and I wrestled another family for the last doughnuts in Pittsburgh (all in good fun...though we did leave the doughnut aisle with a strange sheen of white doughnut powder in front of the bakery counter). We ended that evening with a party with some friends during which we dined on more wine and cocktails and everyone's favorite hors d oeuvers.
Christmas morning we watched my too-cute niece and nephew rip open a pile of gifts and exclaim with joy. It was brilliant. We followed that up with more visits to the family and an amazing turkey dinner that my Aunt Carol seriously rocked this year. We met the newest member of our family, Ben and there was even more gift opening.
I had lunch with my good friend Darren and his wife (even though I'd caught a Christmas cold -- and missed my dear friend Pat at that lunch as he too was stricken with a holiday flu). I also spent a visit with our neighbors at my mom's that was just too much fun and followed it up seeing my bestest girlfriends, Dani and Kelly and Kelly's new baby Molly (who really is the cutest little thing ever and who I suspect absolutely loves her Auntie Kris). I got to rub Dani's belly and talk to my future honorary niece or nephew who I love so much! Dani - what do we knit for your little one? OH! The possibilities!
Leaving was so hard. All of that love - all of that welcome - all of those laughs... how rich we are in each other's love and in God's love. It was so amazing and I wish with all of my heart that I could do it all over again. I just miss them all so much.
The secret of my life is that I've been blessed by the most amazing people. They take excellent care of me and nurture my quirks and my shortcomings in the most gentle of ways. You couldn't meet a more lucky girl.
And I'm trying to upload Christmas pictures to show you and blogger is issuing the smack down. We'll try again later.
I wish you all the best luck and good health for 2007 and I truly hope you get to meet some of these folks I've told you about - that would make you REALLY lucky.

The New Car...and some goodbyes

This is the actual new car - parked outside of my office building. I'm really thrilled with it and am enjoying a much smoother ride to and from work. I've got one more thing to do for my new insurance company and then I'm free and clear to drive without obligation...of course, I'm off to home for eight days and can't enjoy the car until I return, but hey - no biggie.
The other big news for today is that I am now an official graduate of the Westchester Academy for Entrepreneurial Excellence. This is a course I've been taking for the last 15-16 weeks and it has been so much fun and so educational and has given me all of the tools to get the new business in working order. You can check out the new company at www.westchestermeetings.com I made the website myself - we plan on getting a designer when we have our first few clients under our belts. Until then, I'm really proud of the work. So, I'll miss my pals from the class, they are the neatest folks and great friends, I'll m
iss seeing them every Tuesday. Of course, we're planning to go on with our Alumni Association, so I won't have to miss them too much. I mean, folks dressed up for Halloween... yeah, that's me on the end in this group. I went as a bounced check (that class was on taxes!) What a great time.So - now it's off to Pittsburgh for family fun and holiday cheer. I get to spend some time with my best girlfriends, Kelly & Dani and get to meet baby Molly and talk to Dani's baby (via the belly). It's going to be so great! I've got lunch with Darren and his new wife and hopefully my pal Pat. Things are coming to a nice close for the end of 2006. What an amazing year this has been for me. I wouldn't change much.
And on a personal note, I'm so thankful for Chris. He's my rock - the person who stands beside me when the chips are down or my emotions are up. He's the guy who I am more in love with every morning I wake up. I'm the luckiest girl in the world to have someone so wonderful to share her life with. Merry Christmas, honey!
So - I'll try to post from home, but if not - see you at the end of next week. And we will get back to knitting soon too!

What did I just do?

This isn't my actual new car - but a good picture of what it does look like. Mine is gun metal gray, really nice color (one of my favs), not silver like this one.
If all goes well, I can secure my insurance on Monday and drive the new car home that night. I'm planning not to name this one - I can't have my heart break over a car every time I need to get a new one. I'm a sap to begin with, so Chris knows I'll feel awful every time we decide to make a change, but maybe next time I can do it with some dignity and with less of a sense of loss. Now I'm just trying to figure out if I want lo jack installed. Never thought about it...
Knitting soon, promise.

It's Not You, It's Me.
The holidays are right around the corner and my business launches in January. I'm horribly unprepared. I've been working all weekend and feel no closer to things that I need to accomplish. I am somewhat freakishly calm about this and that has me worried. The class that I've been taking for the last few months has its last meeting before graduation this coming Tuesday. I dread it. I am fearful of not seeing my dear friends - the only people who understand me right now, for they too are doing the insane and trying to launch companies. It's good to be with your own kind. I'm thinking of launching another venture - the AAA. No, I won't be the one to call should your car break down, but if you're a member of our class (or any of the Academy classes) you can be eligible to join the Academy Alumni Association. The motto just might be - hang out with the other crazy people who are trying to launch businesses!
So, there's a lot on a girl's plate. You understand, don't you? Forgive me for being absent - I'll even take some pictures tonight and post them. There are a lot of things on my knitting wish list this year - we'll review the coolest of the cool gifts next entry.
Love ya!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's a finished bonnet - grown up bonnet that is. The real question with this photo is: Amish or not Amish? Hmmm. I learned on Monday and Tuesday that I don't give a damn - this bonnet is warm! It was fun to knit and has a pretty ruffle on the ends of the scarf and on the bonnet. If you can pick up stitches, you can make this too.
This pattern comes to us from the Knit2Together Book by Tracey Ullman and Mel Clark. Love the book, love the bonnet.
I also made some socks! Warm feet!
I have a pumpkin pie baking in the oven right now and the rest of the week off from work. Today Chris and I will be packing up my car and heading home to Pittsburgh for our Thanksgiving celebration. Wish us luck please, we may just spend the entire holiday weekend in the car with the other 38 million crazies who thought it was a good idea to hit the road tonight.
I look forward to Thanksgiving - it's a time to see my family for the first time in a year and be reminded that they don't always miss me, but they're certainly glad to see that I'm alive and New York hasn't swallowed me up whole. Having Chris at my side is always fun and running around Pittsburgh enjoying all that is wonderful about that city is excellent. The food is always great, the company good and my niece and nephew the cutest things on the planet.
So have that extra glass of wine or piece of pie and relax - be at peace and remember how lucky we are to have a day like Thanksgiving.

Knitting Content and pictures - no really, I've got pictures.

Completed projects! I made this beautiful clutch from a book I picked up on Saturday called One Skein by Leigh Radford. I love almost every single project in the book. I'm sort of surprised that it took me so long to buy this, but I'm not at all surprised that I've already made something from the book. The clutch was a blast to knit and I really loved the act of knitting it and felting it. I used Lion Brand's new felting wool in the color Pumpkin. (When I purchased this yarn, I alson bought a pair of those light up knitting needles, but that's for another post, at another time. I'm planning on loading this baby up and carrying it to work tomorrow. It's the perfect color.
I've also completed my branching out scarf in Knit Picks Shine. I have knit this pattern before, but in the wrong yarn. This was the perfect yarn and looks so damn pretty blocking on the floor that I don't want to pick it up - I want to use it as something to admire everyday when I'm in my living room.

Here's a close up look at the leaf pattern - love it.
This is the length - and what people who have only hard wood floor do when blocking a piece. Can you imagine what's going to happen to my linen closet when I make my first big lace shawl? I better move to a place with some freaking carpet.
Well - blogger won't give me any more picture up loads, so I'll tell you instead of showing you what's on the needles now. I'm making myself the Grown Up Bonnet from the book Knit2Together. I love this piece and can't wait to wrap myself up in it for the winter.
In other news, this has been a really hard week for me and I've got a lot of hard weeks ahead. But even in the midst of darkness in one person's life, you can see the joy in other's lives - such is the case in my dear friend Danielle has announced that she and her husband are having a baby. I couldn't be more thrilled for her. I can't wait to meet her dear, dear baby. I know what a wonderful mother Dani will be.

Put Up Your Dukes!

I got it from my points program through my credit card. It's actually a portable alarm clock/stereo for my iPod! How cool is this? I can wake and sleep to my music or podcasts and it's portable. It also comes with a remote - so we can just use it as a stereo. It fits both my mini and Chris' Video iPod. So cool. I'm loving this!
Ok - knitting content. You'll be very proud of me because even though I am in the throws of trying to open a business, I have also been carving out time to knit. I told you in the last post that I'd show off some of the insanity of a late night shopping trip to the Knit Picks website:

I've made a few pairs of socks too - there are about four balls of yarn that are in sock form missing from this picture. I've got a good stash of sock yarn going here. I think I need some self striping...and I have to admit, though I know this is tired and everyone on god's green earth is talking about it, but I want some Socks That Rock. I'm so into getting my hands on some and I just don't know when this could happen and I'm not going to do anything nice when I get this yarn - I'm going to be totally selfish. I will pet the yarn, knit the yarn and wear the yarn all to myself. I know this. Someday - I will get my hands on some of that yarn so that I can know what all of the fuss is about.

Here us almost one whole ball from the above yarn group - another pair of socks for the Sock Hop!
After an hour of trying to get blogger to upload a fe more pictures, I am bowing out of the fight. Blogger wins. I will show you even more pictures of some finished socks (a complete pair!) at another time.
As for the rest of things...well, I'm working hard to launch the new company, finish school and keep our current company going. It's a busy time, but Chris is taking me to the theater tonight, so I'm looking forward to that and hoping very much to squeeze in a nap before having to leave! I hope your weekend will be wonderful!
PS - Does anyone else find it ironic that blogger's spell check always lists the word "blogger" as a misspelled word? Hmm.

Sock Hop/Branching Out/Haunted Pirate Ships

Ok fellow sock hoppers, I know I need to "hop to it" (sorry, I had too...) but I'm almost done with the first sock and hopefully I can finish it up this week so that I can cast on for my second sock. I'm really enjoying knitting these and do like the Knit Picks Pallet - though this color (called blush) seems to look a little dull - not sure why. I've got a slew of this yarn in a ton of colors (I went on a sock yarn bender one lonely night when it was just me, the lap top, some beer and apparently my credit card... ) it resulted in a very fun shipment from KP. These things happen. We just have to move on and knit some socks. I'll show you a picture of how many balls of this yarn I actually have stashed next time.
In the meantime - this has been stealing some of my sock knitting time:

"Branching Out" from a 2005 issue of Knitty. I love this pattern (click on the picture for a better view) and spent part of my weekend working out how I can make this into a fun blanket. I think the math is complete and after I finish the socks, this scarf and a hat - I'm going to cast on for that blanket. Fun! Fun! Not sure what yarn I'll use to make the blanket, but the scarf is knitted in Knit Picks Shine - color is grass. I love this yarn. It really does shine, the cotton is wonderful and silky. I've got 3/4 of the cardi "Sitcom Chic" knitted up in this stuff (I sadly got stuck on the pattern and haven't been able to figure out what to do. I'm totally stuck and think I'm in for a trip to the frog pond. In the mean time, I totally dipped into the stash for that sweater and liberated this neglected yarn.)
The hat is also from Knitty and I've had my eye on making it:

From the 2003 Knitty archives - Lacecap. I realize that this cap isn't exactly practical for an East Coast, New York City winter, but really, what about cute little hats is ever practical? Cute is cute, not practical. So hopefully, I'll be wearing a nice little set of hat and scarf before the really cold weather sets in.
In other news, Chris and I spent the day building a haunted pirate ship for Halloween in our dear friend Jen and Adam's front yard in New Haven. Assisted by half the neighborhood kids, I was too busy having a grand time to run inside and grab the camera. These things also happen.
In other news - The Steelers won today 45-7. Oh yeah baby. It's football season!

Companies and Crafts
Soooo I'm not giving up crafts, hell no - not just for some new way to make money and support myself and some day husband, we've got priorities here at YarnalKnowledge so we went out and signed up for the Sock Hop Knit Along over at Romancing the Yarn. What am I crazy? Oh yeah, I just read a little fact that 80% of new businesses fail in the first year, so I am crazy - without a doubt, buy
t very, very sensible to sign up for that knitalong. A girl needs to knit and sometimes a busy girl needs a deadline to help her perform. So without further ado - my SockHop creation was started on Sunday night (per the rules):
This is the "Classy Slip-Up" sock from Betsy Lee McCarthy's book "Knit Socks!" I love the pattern repeat (very easy to remember) and this is sort of new to me, I'm usually knitting straight stockinette socks, so we'll see how I do when I get to the heel.

I'm using the new KnitPicks magnetic pattern holder thingermerbob to hold my pattern up for me. It's super-terrific, I can't figure out why none of us made this and sold it prior to this time - it's brilliant.
well, blogger is doing that thing where it promises it's uploading your photo and then not uploading your photo. I was going to show you a picture of my new sewing machine. I got a SINGER Simple - It's this one if you want to have a look. I have made something - a custom table cover for my coffee table (a need for protection made this project happen). I'll try and show you pictures of that later on.
In the mean time, I have to continue to ponder my price list for the new company, complete my vision and mission statements and write copy for the front page of the website. I am really crazy. Sigh.
Have a great night!

Cozy-Posie

Cozy is done just in time for the fall weather to roll in. I used a little unknown stash-busting yarn in heather gray to knit this up. It is no where near the weight that this pattern called for, but what the hell? There are no real rules in shawl knitting. The darn thing fits and I had a great time knitting it. It's warm and big and I've worn it several times to work last week (it's something like Antartica in my office whenever the sunshines - the A/C is a little outta whack).
Final measurements basically match the pattern: 67.5 inches in length and 18.75 inches in width.

So what to knit now? Well, I've cast on today for a pair of "classy slip up socks" with some pretty pink Palette from Knit Picks (100% Peruvian Wool -official color name is blush).
I'm also using Knit Picks new double pointed needles for the first time (size 1) and I am happy to report that I really, really like them. I've been having trouble finding dpn's recently because for no good reason, I love my dpn's to be metal. I constantly read all over blog land that people have to use bamboo or other wooden needles to knit socks. Metal is too slippery, the needles fall off the stitches, etc. I've never had this problem. I've knit a bunch of socks on Boye needles, happily watching the paint peel off of the end of the needles which for me, was a mark of experience - of good use. My only complaint with the Boye needles: the only sell them in packs of 4 needles. I do not like to knit socks with 4 needles, but rather 5. I think things turn out so much better with 5 needles - less stress on the stitches mean less likelihood of ladders in your knitting as you work in the round. So for awhile, I bought two packs of the same size in the Boye. It wasn't so bad - I could get a bunch of things knitting on all of those needles. But now, I can't seem to track down those dpn's and now it sort of ticks me off to have to buy two packs.
In comes the package from Knit Picks with sets of five metal needles, they have nice sharp points on them, very comfortable and haven't dropped a stitch yet (knock wood). I love em. And at about $2.99 for the 5 pack - who could resist them? Fantastic - I only hope they continue to make them in all sizes 'cause I'd like to make some hats on size 8 this winter and I hope they'll have what I need.
Pictures of the sock and the new needles and the pattern holder (what!?!) that I'm using coming this week. I'm now going to go and clean the bathroom (every girls wish and want for a sunny Sunday afternoon), watch football and knit and smile as my dear sweetheart cooks me up his famous carrot and potato soup (oh good Lord, it is sooooo good). I'm one of those girls who got lucky and found me a man who can cook some serious noshes! He's taken ladies.
